Dortmund/Germany, 25 January 2024. tde and US Conec are expanding their strategic cooperation: As an MMC Collaborator, tde – trans data elektronik GmbH will manufacture new cable assemblies with MMC connectors at its state-of-the-art production site in Lower Saxony. The multi fiber connector based on the innovative TMT ferrule (Tiny MT) has a very small form factor (VSFF) and is available as a 12-, 16- or 24-fiber connector. The MMC is the first fiber optic connector to also offer angle-polished convex surface (APC) in the multimode version. The result is improved values for return loss and insertion loss. The MMC portfolio from tde covers various fiber optic applications, including patch cords, fan-out and trunk cables. In combination with the modular tML platform, tde can double the packing efficiency of their cabling systems and offer companies simple migration options of currently up to 800G.

tde offers customers future-proof cabling infrastructures with high packing density for transmissions of currently up to 800G. To this end, the network expert is integrating the innovative MMC connector into its portfolio: “The technology partnership with US Conec once again underpins our claim to be an innovation leader: In 2020, we introduced the MDC connector on our tML platform the highest packing efficiency on the market. Now, as an MMC Collaborator, we are the first German manufacturer of fiber optic assemblies with the new MMC connector and are integrating them into our successful tML system platform,” says André Engel, Managing Director of tde. “This integration opens up new perspectives for us in high-density applications – both in the patch area and in the rear area.”

Tripling of packing density – Improved return loss – APC cut for multimode

The MMC connector is a new generation of highly compact multi-fiber connectors: it integrates a space-saving TMT ferrule (Tiny MT) with a VSFF connector (Very Small Form Factor). This means that it is only a third of the size of an MPO connector.

The TMT ferrule forms the centrepiece of the new MMC connector: it is based on the same fiber and guide pin alignment structure of the popular MT ferrule and the MT-16 ferrule. The x12 TMT ferrule holds 1 row of 12 fibers in a 250µm pitch or 2 rows of 12 fibers in a 250 µm pitch, and the x16 TMT ferrule holds 16 fibers in a 250 µm pitch. While the fiber and guide pin pitch is comparable to the MT-16 technology; the ferrule size is less than 25 percent.

The MMC also delivers impressive performance: its optical performance complies with the IEC 61753-1 Class B standard with an improved insertion loss of max. 0.25 dB. The connector has been tested to Telcordia standard GR-1435 and TIA 568 mechanical requirements and fulfils the GR-326 standard.

For easier handling in environments with high packing density, US Conec has equipped the MMC with a DirectConec™ push-pull cable boot: Network technicians can simply plug and unplug the connector by using the easily accessible boot without additional release aids.

MMC connector doubles tML packing efficiency

tde will also integrate the MMC connector into its tML platform: This is made possible by the modular system of the cabling platform, which can easily integrate new connector faces and opens up simple migration paths for companies up to currently 800G. There can be integrated 24 of the 24F MMC connectors into one module. This means that up to 576 fibers per module and up to 4608 fibers can be accommodated in one height unit. The APC (Angled Physical Contact) surface helps the MMC connector to offer improved return loss even in the multimode version.

“We are delighted that tde has chosen the MMC connector for its successful tML system platform – both in the patch area and in the rear area,” says Ronald Habekothe, International Sales Manager EMEA at US Conec. “Our goal is to be able to offer customers migration-proof high-density and high-speed networks. With the tML system platform and MMC connection technology, companies can be sure that they have found an investment-proof migration option up to currently 800G. We plan to continue our strategic co-operation with tde in the future.”

The tML – tde Modular Link-System

tML is a patented, modular cabling system consisting of the three key components module, trunk cable and rack mount enclosure. The system components are 100 percent manufactured, pre-assembled and tested in Germany. They enable plug-and-play installation on site – especially in data centres, but also in industrial environments – within the shortest possible time. Heart of the system are the rear MPO/MTP and Telco connectors, which can be used to connect at least six or twelve ports at a time. Depending on the module configuration, transmission rates of up to 800G are currently possible. The fiber optic and TP modules can be used together in a module carrier with a very high port density.
