Dortmund, 26/05/2010. The new tMO (tde Modular Optical Connector) cable jetting application from tde – trans data elektronik GmbH, the leading manufacturer, distributor and system provider of network technology, is a patented fibre-optic solution for use in cable jetting systems. Since the connector shell is not attached until after the cable has been installed, tMO enables the use of duplex connectors in the pre-assembled system. The new process is particularly well suited for FTTH applications, since installation can be completed without needing to access the home itself and the need for time-consuming cable preparation or splicing work is eliminated.

Conventional cabling in piping systems

Traditionally fibre-optic cables are installed in buildings by being pulled through channels to their destination by the installer. If the cables are already fitted with connectors, the connector size will determine the minimum diameter of the channels. The installer must be present within the building during the entire cabling process. Even with cable jetting, the blowing of cables into micro ducts is done from the building side. In general, connectors are only spliced or prepared on site, in the building. Until now, the blowing of prefabricated cables in narrow pipe systems was not possible due to the size of the duplex connector.

Compact and clever – the tMO jetting connector

The tMO jetting connector from trans data elektronik offers a new approach. The cables that are to be installed are prefabricated, but not yet fitted with connector shells. The cables are blown from a central point, thus reaching the customer connection point. There, the connector shell is simply snapped on to the cable and the connection is operational.

First of its kind: Duplex connector in piping systems

The unique feature of the tMO jetting connector is that both simplex and the LC duplex connector variants can be installed, even over very long distances – the application has been tested successfully up to 800 metres. The tMO connectors are 100% compatible with LC connectors and are also available in an APC version that supports fibres with angled end faces. A very slender miniature splitter divides the duplex cables into two separate cables which are each terminated with prefabricated connector components. The inner diameter of the ducts required for the duplex variant is just 4mm, while simplex cables need just 3mm. These prefabricated fibre optic cables can therefore easily be blown into standard micro ducts. Even tight bend radii of just 35mm represent no obstacle to the duplex solution. Even though tMO was developed especially for use in the Draka JetNet® cable jetting system, it can also be used in combination with other conventional jetting systems.

"In fibre-to-the-home environments, the tMO plug offers huge benefits. It allows completely prefabricated cables to be blown and installed from the distribution side, totally eliminating costly and time-consuming splicing of the cable on the home side. As access to private homes is no longer necessary, we can also eliminate the lengthy process of arranging appointments with the home owner," said André Engel, CEO of tde – trans data elektronik GmbH.
